Hello Reg, Your site is the most beautiful and inspiring that I have come across, I am

truly sincere. You are entitled to be so proud of all your hard work - and no doubt that

of others too - for that is certainly what it has been - and no doubt still is. I have found

your writings a joy and so easy to read, and the photographs of your family and all

that surrounds you an absolute pleasure. We are only here for a very short moment

in time, it is lovely to be remembered in a special way and you have left your immortal

imprint held within your lovely home and surroundings, and the site that you have

created for us all - which so many have shared and enjoyed. A short line would not

have been enough !! Sending warm wishes to yourself and family. Pauline, Devon.

With ancestors still lying within Lovely Jersey.

Every now and then in one's life someone special steps forward and does

something for the good of all, including wildlife. Reg, you are one of those

rare, special people. I am proud to be your friend. Your accomplishments

in building your fantastic pond, garden and aviary is truly recognized.

However, to continue to expand the accomplishment by sharing it with

the rest of us is a feat in itself. I know you have a tremendous amount

of hours in building your Web site and I am having a blast watching it

grow. Of course I've had a few beers watching your progress. I am anxious

in one sense for the final product but on the other hand I can see that it is

possible for it to ever end as there will be so much to tell. I hope that one

day I can walk those paths that I see in the pictures. Take care!

Patricia

Dear Reg Congratulations on all your hard work with transforming that field

into a haven. Having being privileged to enjoy your friendship and watch the

development of your "pond" over the years, it is wonderful to be able to see

it in all its glory on the Web. You and Mary have always been the most

generous hosts and welcomed friends and guests to your home and gardens

with that very special skill of making everything an unique experience of

complete pleasure. Now through the marvels of modern technology you are

able to welcome the world to share the beauty and vision of your very special

garden. Congratulations on creating a veritable Garden of Eden - Jersey

Tourism should give you a special award for putting Jersey on the Web in

such a spectacular way. Alan Titmarch - who's he? Reg Langlois is the

Alan Campbell

Good morning Reg, from Southern Vancouver Island. Came across your site

through the Garden Forum Web-site. Fantastic job. I can relate to the work

you have done. I also enjoy working with rock and building waterways.

Thank you for sharing your garden with your community and with us here

on the web. I would like to shake your hand some day.

I think that they enjoyed seeing the garden online and in person.

From the past

From 1997, when we had three open gardens, to 2002, when we had six open gardens, it is

estimated that at least four and a half thousand adults plus children in total have visited our

garden on Open Garden Days. Between two and four hundred visitors could be expected

on a fair day.

Due to enormous demand from hard working charity fund raising organizations, we have

decided to have eight open gardens during 2003.  These include The Brook Hospital (for horses),

Hospice (Lymphodoema), Friends of the Animal Shelter, Friends of the

Maritime Museum, Sands (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society) and The Jersey Society

for the Disabled. The Family Nursing Association and The Association of Girl Guides

are considering having open gardens here.

We usually have open gardens for fund raising on Sundays, when helpers are willing to

give their time. Many of the organizations have been fund raising for quite a few years

and are very well organized. They are able to call on half a dozen or so helpers who

will undertake duties, such as setting out tables, putting  advertising posters up and

collecting entry money at the gate (normally £2.00  children free). At the planning stage

the organizers will have decided whether they will have a BBQ or cream teas or whatever.

I make a point of not being involved. An example of a theme  was the 1920's era, which

was very popular last year. We will have to see what ideas come along this year.

Garden tables and chairs are set out on the lawn and refreshments are served from the

conservatory.

In the past, the open garden organizers have had a variety of attractions for their visitors,

such as face painting, pony rides, bouncy castles, BBQs, pétanque,  boules, find the

treasure, plant sales and many others .

The Open Garden days are organized entirely by the fund raising committees of the

charities concerned. They advertise the event and organize the catering, the car parking

and, most important,  the fund raising. They use part of the garden where tables are

set up for serving refreshments.

Refreshments vary with each fund raising committee. There might be cream teas or it

could be a BBQ.   Often enough they have a theme, 1920's era is an example.

Accompanied by adults, school children and other similar groups will be made more than

welcome when visiting the garden. It has always been an attraction for youngsters in their

education, with the Aviary, the Pond and the flowers and bushes.

The garden is very accessible to everyone, whether able or disabled.

Artists and painters are also welcome.  I think they would find the garden

an interesting subject to paint.

I  never forget the happy, smiling faces of the older visitors, especially that of one elderly

lady of ninety-nine, who came with me around the garden. I was a little concerned when

she stopped for a second, turned around and, smiling with a naughty twinkle in her eye,

said: "Let us wait for the old ones. They cannot keep up."

Just recently, we had the pleasure of a hundred years old lady visiting

the garden. She walked around unaided

An Open Garden at Badgers Holt is certainly an experience not to be missed.

We started having open gardens exactly one year after laying and planting out the garden.

The idea came from friends who thought our garden would be appreciated by others.

We knew absolutely nothing about open gardens as I had never been to one.

The first open garden was a huge success and we just could not believe that there

would be so much interest in gardening. We were told that we had the right balance

and it was interesting for people of all ages, which gave us a lot of encouragement

to continue.

I suppose having the right balance is having a car park adjacent to the garden

accommodating up to one hundred and thirty cars with easy access for disabled

persons, as there are no steps to be negotiated . There are hundreds of trees,

bushes and plants for  visitors to identify. Many plants are perfumed  and, much

to my surprise, visitors of all ages are absolutely fascinated with the many types

of colourful birds in the aviary.

There are  pathways throughout the garden leading the visitors to different areas.

The main pathway will take you right around the pond and under the flowering

covered tunnel behind the waterfall. Another will take you into the rose garden.

Jersey Tourism are interested in developing the horticultural side of tourism.

Visitors to Jersey are now invited to visit private gardens, normally by

appointment. A scheme started a couple of years ago is proving very successful.

We have small groups of visitors to the garden such as those organized by a

travel agent from the UK. They pay us several visits a year and they are all

keen and very enthusiastic gardeners.

We often have school parties of twenty or thirty children. The garden with

the pond and fish and especially the aviary are a great attraction and

extremely educational.

Occasionally we have groups from retirement homes, both able and disabled.

They look forward to their outings.

Badgers Holt is a working Garden

There is always something going on in the garden

or in the aviary.

Something NEW

________________

Like the idea?  … and it’s free

………. I have just thought of itI am sure that it will encourage

more folk to visit the garden, and part with their pennies.

All monies go to the BBC Children in Need Appeal Fund from the fairy garden.

__________

Year round fund raising for the BBC Children in Need Appeal Fund

It is to encourage children and adults to take an interest in gardening.

Creating a miniature fairy garden

I am asking if there are children and children at heart (adults) if they would like to

create a miniature fairy garden of their very own.  I am reserving an area in the

garden adjacent to the fairy garden to accommodate up to twenty-four separate

gardens, each measuring1.5m x1.5m   with a picket fence dividing them and a gate

to enter each one. In the case of a school, they would have a garden measuring

3m x 1.5m…………. It is not a competition.

The children will first present a plan/design of their idea of a miniature fairy garden

to me or in the case of a school to their teacher for our perusal. They will be able

to start building their garden towards the end of March 2006. Garden plans (please

keep them simple) can be drawn up between now and March. The fairy garden

builders will also be expected to maintain their own gardens during the summer

season, say from May to September. At this moment, I am planning to construct

a raised area so that disabled folk can join in the fun.

To avoid disappointment, I would suggest that anyone wanting to take part in

this new project might like to put their names down sooner rather than later.

There is no age limit.

Safety: An adult must accompany children at all times when working on

or visiting the garden.

Materials used should be less than 50% artificial.

The garden must not exceed 0.5 meters high (or 18 inches to some.)

Cost of materials for the gardens should not exceed £5.00.

To be continued  ………… more detail (when I have thought of them) to follow later.

Please phone Reg Langlois for any details or help that you may require.     Tel: 01534 743756
